We love food and we really knew we were out of our league in NYC so we planned our culinary tour by going to places the locals would recommend. Some of them were surprising plain as you might imagine like DiFara's. The atmosphere was picnic style at best but the pizza was delicious and it was of no wonder why this is the "best" pizza of all 5 boroughs of NYC. From the elderly owner hand cranking cheese for each pizza and cutting basil with scissors to finish your pie to his son who literally drew your pizza on a handmade diagram while you ordered so he would know where to put it in the oven. Then other places like PJ Clarks with over a hundred years of service to customers and celebrity's exceeded our expectations even after we waited 1 and 1/2 hours to get a particular table in the corner so Harrison could climb around (this was their decision not our request) since they do not have high chairs. The food was spectacular and the you knew from the minute you walked in that this was a special place in the sea of NYC restaurants. Of course we had to go to Serendipity 3 for frozen hot chocolate made famous by Oprah years ago and Katz Deli for pastrami sandwiches.
We planned each dining experience and got reservations where ever we were allowed, however we made one spontaneous choice and we were not disappointed, Ellen's Stardust diner is a 50's joint that offers live music by the Servers who are trying to make it to Broadway. It was so fun and kept all of our attention through dinner.
The main focus of our trip besides doing holiday stuff was our trip to Lion King. It was fantastic, both kids loved it. Hudson sat at the edge of his seat watching and trying to understand each scene.
I have always tried to imagine what NYC was really like, all the people, the rat race, the arts, the food, the buildings, the history, the museums, the nightlife, Times Square. We came away loving it more than we ever thought we would and we can't wait to go explore again.
